Pro Tips – Grip & Posture | Part I
Everyone that plays this game has been guilty at one time or another of overlooking the fundamentals that the golf swing is based upon. Fixing some of these principles may have huge effects on the flight of the golf ball and lead to huge dividends on the golf course.
When talking about the grip, there are a couple of key things that you want to look at before you swing a golf club. One is where you are holding the grip in your hands. Many people tend to hold the grip through the center of the palm (these are the people that wear their golf glove out on the pad of their hand). The grip of the club should be held as much in the fingers as you can with the pad of the hand on top of the grip. An easy way to achieve this feeling is to hold the club out in front of you with your strong hand (about halfway up the shaft). Take your weak hand and shake hands with the grip of the club, putting the grip directly across the base or your fingers. Curl your fingers around the rest of the grip making sure that the weak hand thumb is pointed directly down the center of the shaft. With your strong hand, place it on the grip, again through the fingers, making sure that the strong hand thumb is slightly in front of the centerline of the shaft. The ten finger, overlap, or interlock grip may be used, but make sure that both hands are touching each other on the grip. There should be no separation between the hands. A good grip allows the hands to work as one and release the club through impact. A good release helps reduce the amount of slice that a lot of people have and adds distance to the shot.
